About Socktober

The Socktober Challenge invites children to engage with developing world issues through the language they understand best – play! Children are challenged to ‘Sock it to Poverty’ using the international game of soccer.
Shooting goals with their own hand-made recycled ‘Sockball’, students will experience how soccer is played in the countries supported by Catholic Mission.

Socktober Mission Day

The Socktober Challenge is part of Catholic Mission's schools engagement program. It includes our 360 degree virtual reality goggles to experience mission in 3D, as well as our #shoestories initiative. Hence, a Mission Day is a great engagement for your school and could easily tie in with what your school is already undertaking for World Mission Month and Anti-Poverty Week in October.

How to Play

Students wear their favourite teams' soccer jerseys and kick goals to ‘Sock it to poverty!’ Each child kicks 5 balls in a penalty shoot-out style, and is sponsored for 5 attempts. One goal attempt will be played with the ‘Sockball’ which is hand-made by students, giving a real-life understanding of soccer in developing countries. The goal keeper is an integral part of the game and can join in the fun. Invite your school principal, parish priest, mayor or local soccer star to be your goal keeper!
